This Ginger Beer Recipe Is So Good — And Good For You, Too

 

You want to keep your kiddo hydrated with healthy drinks like water and milk. But if they’re reaching for juices and even soda, you might need to stop their supply of sugary liquids and look for something else — like ginger beer. Don’t be fooled by the name, though, because ginger beer isn’t alcoholic, and with its many health benefits, this ginger beer recipe is a drink you’ll definitely want to raise your glass to.

Dan Zanes should know. The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter gave us his ginger beer recipe, and it’s healthy as well as delicious. “I learned this from Father Goose’s mother Joyce Rhoden,” Zanes explains. “It’s going to be strong but don’t be afraid; it’s good for you!”

Here’s a brief background on ginger beer. Not to be confused with ginger ale, ginger beer is also non-alcoholic and has a spicier, bolder flavor than its carbonated counterpart. Originating in England in the mid-1700s, ginger beer was known as an alcoholic drink since it was made from water, ginger, sugar, and a fermentation starter like ginger beer plant. (The fermentation process can take up to two weeks!) This ginger beer recipe only takes about a hour.

Now, if your child has had an upset tummy and you’ve given them some ginger ale, you’ll be happy to know that ginger beer works in a similar fashion. The major benefit of ginger is its ability to aid in digestion and settle sick stomachs. It’s also been known to help prevent blood clots, has anti-inflammatory properties, and can decrease your risk for cancer, too.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 cups ginger
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions
 

  • Grate the ginger.
  • Boil a gallon of water on the stove.
  • Once the water has boiled, add ginger.
  • Let the ginger sit in the water for an hour.
  • Strain the ginger.
  • Add lime juice and sugar to taste.
