But how did Women’s History Month come to be, anyway? Well, it didn’t actually start out as an entire month, but rather a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to history. It began when, in 1981, Congress passed legislation requesting that the President proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as Women’s History Week. Over the next five years, it continued to be only a 7-day affair until 1987, when the entire month of March was designated as Women’s History Month, per Womenshistorymonth.gov. The goal was to commemorate and encourage the study, observance, and celebration of women in U.S. history.
