If you thought that the month meant for honoring women (and in particular, moms) was in May, you might want to step it back by about 60 days. That’s right, March is proudly reserved as Women’s History Month, a time when people can learn more about the incredible impact women have had on history and find ways in which to empower themselves and their daughters, too. And if you’re looking to spruce up your social media feed, you can use these Instagram captions for Women’s History Month to help show off your support for women who helped pave the way towards many of the freedoms we enjoy today.
But how did Women’s History Month come to be, anyway? Well, it didn’t actually start out as an entire month, but rather a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to history. It began when, in 1981, Congress passed legislation requesting that the President proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as Women’s History Week. Over the next five years, it continued to be only a 7-day affair until 1987, when the entire month of March was designated as Women’s History Month, per Womenshistorymonth.gov. The goal was to commemorate and encourage the study, observance, and celebration of women in U.S. history.
