Here’s How to Make Reindeer Food, Because Rudolph Is Going To Be Ravenous

Delivering presents to all the good little boys and girls on Christmas Eve sure can be a workout. That’s why Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen (and Rudolph, too!) all need their energy to help pull Santa’s sleigh. But magical reindeer need special nutrients in order to perform at their best. This recipe for reindeer food can help give them a much-needed snack as they fly through the skies!

Although your kiddos can become mini master chefs in the kitchen while they make reindeer food, they shouldn’t try to eat their creations themselves. Why? Well, much like food for other animals, reindeer food is meant specifically for Santa Claus’ favorite reindeer. Even though it has most edible ingredients (like oatmeal, sugar, and red and green sugar crystals), it also has glitter, which isn’t safe to eat. And if you’re wondering why there’s glitter in it, that’s so that the food shimmers in the moonlight — and reindeer flying overhead can spot it quickly in case they need a snack in between delivering presents. But if you want to make the entree completely edible for all of Santa’s sleigh-pulling reindeer, you can use sanding sugar instead.

Have fun making reindeer food for Rudolph and the gang — and be sure to whip up some Christmas cookies for your crew, too.
