Sugar plums, sugar cookies — it seems like almost every holiday treat boasts sugar as its base ingredient. Finding desserts that favor fruit instead of refined sugar isn’t always easy, (and no, fruitcake definitely doesn’t count). If you’re scratching your head as to what holiday snack you can give your child that won’t have them crashing after a sugar high, you won’t have to put on your thinking cap for too long. Santa Hats are cute, easy to make, on brand, and are made almost entirely from fruit alone.
Even a Grinch couldn’t get grumpy about these sweet Santa Hats. They’re a cute craft that is easy for preschoolers to pull off, require minimal prep time, and woot, can be eaten immediately. As for the Santa Hats themselves, well, they feature the three major players of the fruit world: bananas, grapes, and strawberries. As with any recipe that requires fresh bananas, timing is key, particularly if you’ve got a picky eater on your hands who won’t let a bite of banana pass their lips if it’s even slightly brown. So be sure to make this dessert when you’re ready to eat it right away.
Now, you could just make this with fruit only, but a mini marshmallow on top as part of Santa’s hat only enhances the fun factor. When you’ve washed and sliced your bananas, take a toothpick and slide it through the strawberry, banana, and grape. Add the marshmallow on top and you’ve got a fairly healthy snack that even Santa might want to try when he comes on Christmas Eve.
